Top 5 Book Week Costume Ideas for Teachers

Book Week is a fun time for the kids to get dressed up in costume, but everyone loves an excuse for fancy dress, and teachers are no exception! If you need a bit of help getting into the spirit, we've listed our Top 5 Book Week Costume Ideas for Teachers here. For more info on this year's Book Week theme, merchandise, and more, check out The Children's Book Council website.

1. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum. With infamous characters like the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Good Witch of the North, and of course Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz is a fun Book Week idea for dressing up. The story of an orphan girl in Kansas who enters another world when her house is caught in a cyclone, this is one of the most famous books in popular culture for its colourful cast.

2. Beauty and the Beast. Originally known as La Belle et la BĂȘte, by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, the fairytale Beauty and the Beast is the story of a girl who becomes a guest in a beast's castle. It makes for some great Book Week costume ideas. These Belle and Beast costumes for adults are officially licensed Disney costumes, and really look the part!

3. Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. The story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and has a fantasy adventure, Alice in Wonderland is a perfect Book Week idea. Most recently brought to life in the movies by Disney, these officially licensed costumes feature the Mad Hatter and the Red Queen, and are great re-creations for adults for Book Week.

4. Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Pretty much all of the stereotypes we have of pirates come from this famous coming-of-age tale of the search for buried treasure. Dress up as a pirate in the spirit of Long John Silver, or a pirate wench for a brilliant Book Week costume.

5. The Adventures of Robin Hood. There are many incarnations of the heroic tales of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Recount the adventures of the man who roamed Sherwood Forest - taking from the rich, giving to the poor... and encountering characters like Maid Marian and Friar Tuck along the way. These all make great costumes for Book Week, alongside Robin Hood of course.

Product Review: Harry Potter Infra-Red Battling Wands

Harry Potter Infra-Red Battling Wands:

The reviews are rolling in on the Harry Potter range of Infra-Red Battling Wands from Tomy, and the experts (our faithful Costume Box customers) are raving about them! People who bought one of the Harry Potter wands at Costume Box have rated them with an average review of 3.5 out of 5 stars online.

More than just a plastic wand fashioned from four of the main duelling characters in the Harry Potter movies, these wands have 3 functions for playing on your own or with a mate. The infra-red frequency detects other wands and lets you battle with a friend, playing sounds and lighting up as your wands cross paths. With the flick of a button, you can play sound effects taken right from the Harry Potter movies. And lights in both the wands side and tip can be activated by touch.

You don't need to find your way to Ollivander's in Diagon Alley to get yourself a wand, just follow your fingers to Costume Box online. With all four wands, as well as a full selection of Harry Potter costumes and masks, you'll be ready for battle in no time. Don't forget, the wand chooses you... you don't choose the wand.

Specs:
  • Each wand measures approximately 36cm in length.
  • The grip handle has a button used for up to 3 actions: Infra-red battle, Movie Sound FX, and Light-up tip for casting spells.
  • Available wands: Voldemort, Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

Bollywood Party & Costume Ideas

Okay, your Facebook Photos are looking a bit stale... time for a colourful party... but what to do for a theme? One word: Bollywood! What the bleep is Bollywood, you ask? It's the Indian equivalent of Hollywood as the movie capital of the U.S. - only Bollywood produces about $1billion more in sales every year! So why haven't you seen any of them? Well, they are predominantly in Hindi. Bollywood films are almost always musicals, and contain loads of dancing and singing... and really bright costumes with heaps of over the top melodrama. Bring it on! Here's how:

INVITES:
Check out PartyInvitations.com.au for costume invitations like this one. Or make your own with a little help from the Internet: Here are a few simple tips to follow.

DECOR:
We're talking colour here people! Loads of it. Not sure what we're talking about? Check out these photos - not much black and white there, hey! How can you get your joint looking like the set of a Bollywood movie? A few hints:

- Sheer, patterned, or bright coloured material. Drape it over your blinds, sofas, lamp shades, even walls. Think pastels or deep earth tones.
- Accessorize: candles, frame postcards with Indian images on them, pick up some Bollywood movie posters.
- Pillows: use lots of pillows and matts on the floor to create conversation areas.

COSTUMES:
The traditional Indian garbs for men and women in bright colours will get you the most bang for your buck. Check out the selection of Bollywood costumes for men and women at CostumeBox.com.au - loads of inspiration here:

Don't fret, if cooking freaks you out, there are probably a heap of good Indian take-away joints in your neighbourhood. Let them know how many guests you have coming and they should be able to help you plan a menu.

If you fancy yourself a bit of a chef, check out Taste.com.au - they have a full Indian Cuisine section on their website, with recipes for appetizers through to full meals.

FUN:
  • Movies: Play some movies, even if it's just in the background with the sound off. They are colourful and animated, and will add a little zing to any room.
  • Music: You can easily stream a Bollywood Playlist from a website like: Grooveshark. Or, download a list if you want to have it for keeps - here's a great Bollywood Top 100 songs
  • Dancing: Get your guests up on the dance floor and teach them to do a routine, like Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire... if they haven't seen it, they'll have heard the song at least. Check out this video instruction on YouTube.
  • Musical Chairs: Play a round of Musical Chairs with a flamboyant Bollywood song.
