80's Icon's - Costume Ideas From Movies and Music

The 80's decade featured some serious fame icons,  namely in the music and movie business, so there is no shortage of costume ideas for your next party!

Who would have thought that Cyndi Lauper would turn out to be the only normal one in this bunch!

Check out our list below of 80's movie and music characters that make for awesome dress up ideas. If you have a favourite that you don't see, drop us a comment below, we'd love to hear from you.

These are all available online at Costume Box.

A few of these may look familiar, what with Hollywood being so full of ideas and remaking everything or creating sequels and prequels all the time, but here are some of the more iconic movie characters that featured in 1980's movies: Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Superman, Indiana Jones, and Empire Strikes Back were all block busters that also happened to turn out some great costume ideas.

The Blues Brothers:
This movie was released in 1980, and the main characters make for a great costume idea, especially if you are going as a pair. All you need is a black suit, a black hat, sunglasses, and a pair of saddle shoes. Ta da! Luckily, you can find most of these things in your closet or online at Costume Box. If you haven't seen the movie, be sure to rent it, it's a classic.

Top Gun:
This may be hard to believe if you weren't around in the 80's, but there was a time when Tom Cruise was actually cool! The 1986 movie Top Gun, starring Cruise with Kelly McGillis, featured a student at an elite flying school who falls in love with his teacher. Worth a watch, and makes for a great costume! Pick up a flight suit like this one from Costume Box.

The Little Mermaid:
This Disney classic from 1989 is a perfect 80's costume idea! Dress up as Ariel, the mermaid with a dangerous desire to meet a land lubber. Why are all Disney movies about losing your mother or selling your soul?

Pair up this Ariel Costume from Costume Box with the Ariel Wig and see if you can find your prince.

No matter what your flavour, pop, rock, glam, metal, it all had a discernible 80's fashion flair to it. Some of the most prolific entertainers of our times were borne out of the 80's, ensuring them a lasting place in costume heaven! Madonna may be a stay-at-home mum now, but in the 1980's she was the Lady Gaga of fashion and music. Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, and Van Halen were all equally as cutting edge with their looks and influence on trends.
